A Fantastic Archive

Eddie Campbell, the artist of the original comic, FROM HELL, takes us on a chapter-by-chapter analysis of the creation of the comic by presenting commentary, art, and long excerpts from Alan Moore's legendary scripts. This book is "script-heavy," which is a good thing. We get to see Moore's descriptions for most all of the key scenes from the book, and we often get Campbell's explanations for why he sometimes chose to depict things differently. One of the ongoing pleasures lies in seeing Moore occasionally call for emotional or dramatic images only to be replaced by Campbell's more restrained, matter-of-fact style. The contrast is fascinating, and by the end you get a good sense of Campbell's artistic philosophy.
Honestly, for anyone with a serious interest in FROM HELL, this should be your first supplemental purchase.
I will add, for what it's worth, that I ordered the Kindle for Mac version. There are many illustrations in the book, but I was not able to enlarge them to a readable size. (I'm not sure if it's possible to do so or not.) However, I simply read it with my original hard copy of FROM HELL nearby and enjoyed it immensely.
[I should add that I finally was able to try the book on an iPad and the pictures enlarge to full size perfectly, so my problems with the Kindle for Mac version may just be my own ignorance.]

More Moore

You know how the current theory/ common wisdom is that we only use 10% of our brain? It seems we've only ever read about 10% of what Alan Moore has ever written.
This book is a perfect reason why someone, somewhere, needs to do what Eddie Campbell gives us a taste of here and that's start publishing the COMPLETE ALAN MOORE SCRIPTS. To Quote from E.C.'s introduction,
"These scripts are rich with incident and information that didn't always, or couldn't find its way onto the printed page... Some very fine writing is buried in these scripts, and nobody has ever read
it except me." (pg 12)
Details like the color and rational for the color of clothing, (in a work that he knew would be done in B&W) the psychological underpinning for buildings in the background, amazingly details which is up to the artist to portray in a way he finds possible. (E.C. addresses this in his text, what he kept and what he couldn't)
Frustratingly this is only a taste of what it could have been. As E.C. describes, "I have selected what I find to be the most memorable pages, ninety out of a possible five hundred and one..." (pg 12)
If this isn't enough for you you can try to hunt down a copy of "From Hell: The Compleat Scripts" [9781880325070] but they're rare and only include the scripts for the first three chapters.

Riveting

Love Alan Moore stuff. Great graphic novel from which the movie, "From Hell" was made...great movie too. The story of course, a mix of fact and fiction. It got me interested in the ripper however and got me reading everything I could find on the subject. Learning the characters from this novel made reading other works that much more enjoyable. I highly recommend the latest book on this subject, "They All Love Jack"...perhaps the best researched book to date on Jack the Ripper, I believe this latest book solved the case. IMO only of course.
